Week 16: Wrap-up Webinars & Final Posting

Hello,

Hmm. Taking this "course" I learned about other libraries in the state of Kansas. It let me know what was going on in our state better than just sending a representative to a meeting. I really enjoyed learning about all of the new technology as well. I had heard or had use about half of the information already; however, I was very excited to learn about other avenuse to advertise and improve our library. I especially, liked using "Jing". I now that I can use it for free and that may help our library budget in the future. I am greatful to know that there are so many free sites that I can use for my library. I am excited to use what I have learned to our Library Homepage become more up to date with our college students.

Here are a few words about each week:

1. I blogged about "23 Things"
2. Added people to FB/twittered.
3. Went to an Meeting in another library without leaving my library
4. I just about got flickr'd figured
5. I got RSS and Feed Readers
6. I social tagged and bookmarked
7. I brushed up on my microblogging
8. I put my head in a cloud
9. I recieved instant messages
10. I filmed Oliva and made my own video debut on youtube.
11. I took a break and ate candy bar... (g'me abreak, ...)
12. I made a KOHA catalog screencast to use on our library website for a later date
13. I shared slides of my life
14. I fell in love with Shelfari!
15. I wikis'd out.
16. I'm finally ready to wrap-up

I was not ready to edit a Wiki page. However, I over came the fear and did one. It was fun. I can not wait to try to do it again in the future!

I think this has been a great 15 weeks. I hope to use many of the ideas at my library job. Thank you to all the instructors and friends of 23 Things Kansas!

Week 11: Spring Break!

Week 10 was really our College Spring Break. I spent most of that time riding in a bus to Salina, KS to see our girls play at the National NJCAA Basketball Championships. The owr girls took 3rd in the nation. We are so proud of them! Go Cardinals!

Week 9: Instant Messaging

Meebo is interesting. Although some people do not seem to want to respond. Oh well. It is on to week 10. However, I think I will not be getting it done too soon since our Spring Break starts tomarrow. On top of that our Women's Basketball team will be playing in there national finals tournament starting tomarrow! We are so proud of our LCC Lady Cardinals!

Week Eight: Cloud Computing

Cloud computing....I had never heard of this term until the last few weeks. I did not fuly understand the definition until I did this activity. I had previously went to a Google workshop so I was already familiar with the Google Documents. I went back to the 23 things web page and read some of the comments. I really like the idea that a person can backup just about any information on your Google Docs. If and when I do travel I am going to take Susan Bryant's advice and scan my info to make sure someone else has access to it just in case something happens to me. I am new to this but I already enjoy the ability to import other e-mail systems into google and then you can choose what e-mail to send it out under. Google is Great!Cloud Computing is Awesome!

1.What do you think about using one of these microblogging tools?
*I have already have a site that was started for my library and for myself. So far students do not seem to be using this tool as much as the east and west coast. However, I do for see that changing in the next few months/years.

2. Did you find it easy to find people to follow, especially after a list of examples 2was given?
*It is easy if you already know people who have one. Other wise it is a game of hunt and pick. It is not quite like fb (facebook) where you can look up the city/state, person's name, and school.

3. Who are three people or organizations you starting following this week and why did you follow them? Have you found their posts helpful?
* I have started following @kstatelibraries, @kpickett , and @libraryknitr because they look like they would be interesting people or libraries.

4. What kinds of uses do you see you might have for microblogging? Have you already found some uses for it?
* I think they will evolve into being used by just about everyone and/or buisnesses in next few years. Many of them have already become a success with in the last few months in my area of Kansas. Right now I use you twitter and facebook group as a reminder about things going on at our college and in the Library.

Week 6: Tagging and Social Bookmarking

It was something I had heard of but did not know what it was. I think this will help me keep the web cites I use often in order. I also like that it is hooked into my yahoo account. I can actually remember its information to log in without looking at a cheat sheet. Tagging is similar to what we already do when we create files and folders on our computers the only difference is that we are doing it on the world wide web and other people have access to them.

week 5: RSS and Feed Readers

I used google reader. I added some style and news feeds. Then I went back in and removed many of them that I had never heard of or I didn't like their set. This is really great because the information comes to me and I do not have to search for it. I already use my RSS feed on My Yahoo account.

Week 4: Photo Sharing

I posted the Canadian Tenors pic! They are a great new group that was on Oprah on Wednesday with Celine Dion! They were in my home town a week and half ago! I was able to go and see them. I did not realize at the time that they where already well known in Canada. They are very nice in their performance. They are also going to be on Dr. Phil tomarrow. They will be singing at the All-Star Basketball game in the Cowboy Statium and singing for the Vancover Olympics. They are very talented. You can look them up on youtube! I have enjoyed fliker because you can look up a number of different pictures as well has saving you own photo album on it for free! check out their website http://www.canadiantenors.com/

OPAL : How Green Is My Library: A Conversation with the Co-Authors Ned Himmel and Sam McBane Mulford

2. Write a blog post about the webinar you watched. What was it called? Who hosted it? Was it useful information? In your blog post, also include your thoughts about online meetings and webinars in general. What do you think of the potential for this technology over the next 10 years?

They spoke about making you Library more energy efficient, recycling, and green remodeling. Hosted by TAP Information Services . It brought up some ideas that would be beneficial to libraries in how they use thier paper to the type of insulation they use to build thier buildings. It was very similar to chating online while listening to music. Yet, you are able to communicate with the people speaking. I belive that it will be beneficial in the coming years. I can see a lot of smaller buisnesses using this to connect with thier customers and with other companies.

3. At some point during the next few months, try to attend a live webinar. Some upcoming webinars that look interesting include: Technology Essentials 2010, How Green is my Library?, or Open Office: What Libraries Need to Know. During the week of April 26-30, we’re going to have wrap-up webinars as part of this project. If you haven’t had a chance to attend a live webinar before then, you’ll have the opportunity that week!

Well I attempted on of the Webinars. However, for some reason I'm not able to pull it up. I only get so far. It may be my system. I not heard from my tech. dept. yet so this may get interesting. I have never done a webinar. I am very excited to try one out.
